Will the £1 Million Mecca Bingo win clash be settled?

Recently having reported on the dispute between the latest Mecca Bingo £1 Million winner and her sisters-in-law and sister who had a verbal agreement that if she won, they would share the prize, shortly after which the winner reneged on this, resulting in her partners hiring counsel to appeal to the Scottish Courts in a late night emergency session. The courts ordered an interdict to stop Mecca Bingo paying the woman and also freezing her bank account.

News in the BBC has reported that there was a similar dispute regarding a £100,000 National Bingo prize in which a decision was made at Exeter Courts and then moved to the Court of appeal in London, whereby the winner of the money was allowed to keep the entire prize money for herself and not share any of the money she won with the players who had claimed that there was an agreement in place to share the bingo winnings.

The Judge in this matter concluded that any “casual conversation” they had had regarding splitting the prize was not considered to be legally binding. So it seems that this case might set a precedent for the latest winner in her dispute with her fellow players. People should learn that if you partner with a fellow bingo player or players, a basic agreement in writing should be in place. Large amounts of money can change a persons mind very quickly.
