Breach of Codes
The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) reviews the gambling and bingo ads that are playing in the United Kingdom. They have reviewed fifty six ads and found six of them to be in breach of the code. They haven’t revealed the names of any of the gambling companies but one of the six ads is by a bingo operator.
It isn’t known if the bingo operator is an online or a land-based entity. The UK laws have just recently changed to allow advertising. They have strict standards that the advertisements have to comply with in addition to the gambling jurisdiction where they are licensed having to be on the white list. If the jurisdiction isn’t on the white list, the gambling company can’t advertise. There are five listed jurisdictions: Alderney, the Isle of Man, Malta, Tasmania and Gibraltar.
There are various ways in which the code for advertising can be breached. It is believed that the advertisements either appealed to children or suggested in some way that gambling could enhance the player’s self-esteem or lead to financial security. It is known that four of the six advertisements came from the same advertising agency. The strict laws regarding advertising are part of the responsible gambling initiative in the United Kingdom.
